Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on helping patients to
regain their optimal health naturally. It is a health science that deals primarily with
the spine, central nervous system and their impact on general health. Chiropractic is
more than pain management even though it is used most often to treat
neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain,
pain in the joints of the arms or legs, scoliosis, and headaches.
Like conventional medicine, Chiropractic is based upon scientific principles of
diagnosing through testing and empirical observation and giving treatment based
upon the physician's rigorous training and clinical experience. Unlike conventional
medicine, which relies primarily on drugs and/or surgery to deal with diseases,
chiropractic is a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care. Chiropractic is a
natural approach to restore the body to its natural state. Chiropractic addresses
the source of the problem, not just masking symptoms using drugs with
unmanageable side effects.
The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is
known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose
of manipulation of joints is to correct large or small misalignments that have affected
the proper flow of communication between the brain, the nervous system, and the
rest of the body. Bone misalignments and tissue injury can be caused by a single
traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive
stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an
extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and
biochemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for
the sufferer. When the bones and soft tissues are returned to their proper states,
then the biochemical, neurological, and mechanical processes of the body function
as they are supposed to, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and
allowing tissues to heal. Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. However,
patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment (as
with some forms of exercise) that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours.
The important thing to remember is that chiropractic success occurs by addressing
the source of the problem, not just masking the symptoms.
Besides performing chiropractic adjustment, chiropractors are also trained to
recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide diet &
nutrition, fitness, ergonomics and lifestyle counseling.
